After graduating from the University of Michigan, I moved to Washington, DC where transit also played a significant role in my daily life. The DC Metro system shuttled me around the city, for work and pleasure. I made sure that every place I lived had ready access to the subway lines. As a consequence, except for a brief stint while I was in high school (and I had control of the family Volkswagen Beetle), I did not own an automobile until I moved to Colorado back in 1989.
