Protecting the promise of FasTracks
Boulder County voters know the value of a convenient, efficient and thoughtful transit system. That is why we voted overwhelmingly to support the FasTracks ballot initiative.
With the passage of FasTracks, though, the heavy lifting of implementing this program begins. As your representative on the RTD Board, I intend to ensure we get the promised transit improvements or our communities. Those promises included two new regional services: bus rapid transit (BRT) and the Northwest Rail line. The proposed BRT system will provide fast and frequent service between Boulder County cities and downtown Denver via U.S 36. The planned Northwest Rail service will follow the old Burlington-Northern freight train route, bringing new transit opportunities to commuters in Longmont, Boulder, and Louisville. Both of these new services will play an important role in the continued economic vitality of Boulder County and offer important smart growth opportunities.
Many decisions have yet to be made with respect to the specifics of these two new services, the details of which will have important and lasting impacts. Issues such as noise, the location of layover and maintenance facilities, the design and construction of park-n-ride structures, and efforts to promote transit oriented development are all on the horizon. All of this, of course, is secondary to efforts I am undertaking to ensure that we have the necessary funding to complete the BRT system and Northwest Rail line in a reasonable time frame.
